Metro Columbus unemployment rate rises to 8.5 percent

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for Metro Columbus rose to 8.5 percent in June, up from just 8 percent in May.

The rate increased is attributed to seasonal job loss, especially in the education field, non-contract school workers who are out for the summer, and an increase in graduates and students entering the job market.

Most of the jobs lost were in state education.

However, the numbers are still down from a year ago. Last June, the rate was nine percent.

Columbus also experienced job growth of 600 jobs over the last year. Most of the increase was in professional and business services, leisure, and hospitality.

The report shows that the lowest area jobless rate was in Athens at 6.3 percent.
