AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The red carpet doesn't roll out in Augusta often, but it did Thursday night at Regal Cinemas.

"It feels like you're coming home to a place you've never been," said Chadwick Boseman, the star of the film.

The man playing the Godfather of Soul getting a warm Augusta welcome on the red carpet - something he said he never could have dreamed of.

"I'm getting an opportunity and I know it's a blessing," said Boseman. "That's what it is. At the end of the day, it's just a blessing."

And as for the real James Brown's daughter - she couldn't be happier with the turnout.

"We feel so good that so many people have come out to celebrate this special night," said Deanna Brown-Thomas. "I know dad's big smile is going really well in heaven right now."

The film's director Tate Taylor said he thinks they got it right.

"Chad did his homework, I did my homework, we spent time with Brown family to get it right, and I feel like we succeeded," he said.

City leaders said they hope this is not the last time this red carpet is rolled out right here at home.
