TROY, AL (WSFA) -

Troy Police say a man who was the suspect in an apartment fire is being charged with arson.

Investigators say the suspect, Jerome Owens, fled the scene of the fire but was later caught in a alleyway near an apartment complex on John M. Long Drive, formerly Collegedale Drive. He was taken into custody after biting a university police officer.

The police department says the fire happened on the third and fourth floors of the Oakdale Apartments on Park Street. Investigators later learned the fire was started in Owen's residence at the apartment.

Owens was taken to a local hospital to have additional medical issues treated. He is charged with assaulting a police officer and felony first degree arson.

He was transported to the Pike County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
