Nearly $4k worth of clothes for school children stolen from local ministry

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Nearly $4,000 worth of clothes meant for needy children was stolen from a West Ashley church Thursday.

Members of the non-profit organization Hands of Christ are getting ready to help hundreds of students by providing items they need for school including pants, shirts, socks, underwear and supplies.

The group is still waiting on a new shipment of over 400 pairs of pants they say were stolen last week.

Members of the Presbyterian organization noticed Thursday that several boxes of boy's pants were missing from a storage room at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. They aren't sure how the thieves got in but are glad nothing else was taken.

Director of Operations, Jim Frye said, "When you first find out you're wondering how did this happen. Who would steal from the church for goodness sakes. I am truly amazed at the support the community has given."

This theft is just a minor setback for the organization.

They still have lots of clothes and school supplies to give away.

The new shipment of pants should be here in the next couple of days.

Their website provides information on how families could sign up for help in surrounding counties.
