The Montgomery Police Department reports its latest effort to combat violent crime is working.

Operation Domino was launched after seven homicides in less than five weeks.

Results from July 24 to Aug. 4 include:

  • Traffic citations: 1,503
  • Felony arrests: 168
  • Misdemeanor arrests: 547
  • Capias arrests: 1,359
  • F.I. Cards: 1,144
  • Illegal firearms seized: 29
  • Drug cases: 30

Montgomery police describe the results as "significant."

Major John Bowman reports, "One of the things we study is criminals that [commit] break-in crimes.  A lot of time they already have warrants on them, whether they be minor warrants or felony warrants.  Sometimes we call it a victory if we arrest them on a minor offense, because it could keep them from committing a major crime."

Community policing is a chief priority for Operation Domino.  The initial report shows officers made more than 500 contacts with residents with an emphasis on reaching out to youth in the neighborhoods.  Bowman explains, "We need them as well, we receive a lot of information from the community, and private citizens that offer information that aid and assist us."

There's no specific location for Operation Domino. Officers will use daily crime data to determine where the initiative should be deployed.
