STAUNTON (WSLS) - A calf that lost its back legs to frostbite got a second chance when its owner helped the baby cow get prosthetic legs.

Hero the calf was back home in Virginia after getting two prosthetics legs from Texas A&M's veterinary school.

"Hero is defying all odds. Everyone said he would never make it this far and I'm the only one who said he will and I'm pretty proud of him," owner Kitty Martin said.

Martin rescued the calf from a field in Augusta County more than a year ago. Hero was left freezing and lost both of his back hooves to frostbite.

"When I picked him up, he was skinny, bones sticking out, and full of infection. I didn't know what to do," Martin said.

Martin says she has a connection with this calf and found that he was a fighter just like her.

"I'm a child of abuse and I overcame it and he was in my world abused," Martin said. "I had people fighting for me growing up and it made a lot of difference."

The Martin finally found someone to help Hero at Texas A&M's veterinary school, where they performed the surgery and fitted their first large animal prosthetics.

Now, Hero has a Facebook page, two documentaries, and is coming out with children's books to help kids with special needs.
