SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) -

At least four teams are either not playing in the Sertoma Classic or are deciding to send their junior varsity teams.

The classic is the kickoff to the high school football season but scheduling conflicts and injury concerns are causing teams to miss it.

Conference realignment is forcing some teams around the Lowcountry to play games on what's called Week Zero, the same week of the Classic.

Summerville is sending its backup team and Hanahan is also playing primarily backups.

Other schools like Fort Dorchester and Ashley Ridge are just having to miss it.

"We don't want to play in Sertoma, the main reason is we don't have a JV team we can send and be really respectable,” Bobby Behr, Ashley Ridge’s Athletic Director said.

The money raised by the Sertoma Classic goes toward charity. It’s unclear if teams dropping out will affect fundraising. Sertoma is scheduled for August 21-22 at Johnson-Hagood Stadium.
