MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A man was caught in a scary situation Thursday night after his boat capsized while he was on the Alabama River.

The man, who identified himself only as Michael, says he spent three hours swimming for his life before coming ashore at Riverfront Park in downtown Montgomery.

Montgomery fire officials responded to the scene and checked the man's vitals. He reportedly refused to be transported to a hospital.

Michael says he was in a jon boat, leaned over too far and the boat flipped south of Montgomery.

"There really wasn't nowhere to get on shore. I seen the lights down here, and I just kept swimming. I didn't know I was swimming upstream," Michael said.

The 33-year-old says he encountered a couple snakes during the swim, and he's pretty exhausted.

Michael said he didn't have plans to call authorities, but some people at Riverfront Park spotted him and called Montgomery police.
