Police Have 'Promising Leads' in Montgomery Double Murder Case

Police returned to the crime scene Saturday. Police returned to the crime scene Saturday.

Police are probing the slayings of a prominent Montgomery couple.

The bodies of 62-year-old Winston "Brent" Springford, and his wife, 60-year-old Charlotte Springford, were found Friday in their South Hull Street home. They were last seen alive on Thursday.

Montgomery Police Lt. Huey Thornton says the case is being handled as an apparent double homicide, however no motive has been released.

Investigators were seen at the home again on Saturday looking for more clues. Lt. Thornton says the department is following up on "several promising leads."

WSFA 12 News has learned of a possible burglary at a second home owned by the Springfords near Lake Martin. It's unclear whether the two incidents are connected.

At last check, police were still looking for the couple's 1998 black Jaguar, which was stolen from their Montgomery home. A vehicle matching the description of the car was seen in Millbrook Friday on Alabama 14 heading towards Wetumpka.

The Springfords lived in Montgomery's downtown Garden District, and the deaths have shaken neighbors. To reassure them, police have announced that the murders do not appear to be a random act of violence. They say the Springfords probably knew their attacker. There was no sign of forced entry into the home.

Winston Springford was president of the Pepsi Cola bottling plant in Luverne. In Luverne, First Citizens Bank president William Petrey says when it came to helping the community, Pepsi and the Springfords always said yes and never declined.
