DALE CO., AL, (WSFA) -

The Dale County Sheriff's Office continues to mourn the death of one of their own.

Black ribbons now hang on the door at the sheriff's office in remembrance of deputy Gordon Bennett. Bennett died after a battle with cancer.

"There will never be anyone to replace him, that's for sure and he has left a big hole here," said Capt. Mason Bynum with the Dale County Sheriff's Office.

Bennett, 68, joined the sheriff's office after serving as an Alabama game warden for 35 years. He not only served as a deputy but as the primary firearms instructor for the sheriff's office. Bennett was instrumental in training officers in Dale County properly preparing them to serve and protect residents in the area.

"He spent countless hours on the range with our young guys and even the old guys but especially the young guys coming out of the academy," Bynum said. "He would teach them how to talk to people and treat people and just overall how to do this job."

Many say the life and legacy of Bennett will not be forgotten in the Wiregrass or in the state of Alabama given that Bennett's expertise brought law enforcement from across the state to Dale County to train.

"In my opinion, he was the best one around," Bynum said. "He was the best one in the state no doubt but he just had a way with people and training people. Guns and shooting and training was something he loved and was passionate about it."

So as the dale county sheriff's office prepares to say goodbye to their brother in brown, they stand committed to keeping Bennett's life and legacy alive.

Visitation for Bennett will be on Monday from 5-7 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
