Study: Alabama has nation's 3rd worst school system

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

As Alabama parents prepare to send their children back to school, a new study is being released showing just what kind of system to which their kids are returning.

According to the 2014 States with the Best & Worst School Systems study by WalletHub, a personal finance social network, Alabama has the third worst school system in the country among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The study based its results on 12 metrics including dropout rate, math test scores, reading test scores, repeating of grades, pupil/teacher ratio, school safety and bullying incidents.

With No. 1 being the best, Alabama fell far short in multiple categories. The 'Heart of Dixie' ranked 49th in math test scores, 40th in reading test scores, 37th in terms of dropout rates and 34th in pupil to teacher ratio.

The state ranked higher when it came to bullying incident coming in 12th.

Only Mississippi and the District of Columbia showed overall poorer results than Alabama.

On the other end of the spectrum, the study found New Jersey had the best school systems with Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Kansas rounding out the top five.
