State troopers on the lookout for bad drivers

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Everyone take note: The next time you see an 18-wheeler driving along the interstate, the passenger may be a state trooper on the lookout for bad drivers.

"We're going to get out and use 18-wheelers to help us out in terms of locating some of these drivers," said Trooper Curtis Summerville.

Trooper Summerville says I-20/59 has a high volume of crashes and it's where state troopers are focusing on during their operation called Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks, or TACT.

"Following too closely, whether they're texting and driving, cutting people off, improper lane usage," said Summerville. "Those are things that cause crashes."

And that's what state troopers will be looking for.

Here's how it works: The trooper riding along in the 18-wheeler is called the "spotter." When he sees a driver breaking the rules of the road, he'll notify another nearby trooper by radio.

"He'll give him information on a particular vehicle. That trooper will make the traffic stop," said Summerville.

"Great idea," said motorist Faye Glover. "Get them anyway you can get them."

Many drivers were glad to hear about this crack down on unsafe drivers.

"I have kids and there's a lot of unsafe drivers that are speeding, texting and driving," said motorist Billie Trammel. "It's dangerous. I just want to feel safe on the road."

Although she agrees with the purpose of it, driver Frankie Frederick doesn't like how it's being done.

"Going undercover, using the disguise they're using in trucks to try to stop people, I just think that's unethical," Frederick said.

Trooper Summerville says this operation will continue statewide on different interstates, all in an effort to reduce crashes and save lives.
