Gas station murder suspect appears in court

A Columbus man charged with murder turned himself in to police Sunday, and Tuesday morning he appeared in front of a judge.

News Leader 9's Jenyne Donaldson was in the courtroom and has more details on the case.

Chandler Saxton pleaded not guilty in Recorder's Court this morning for the shooting death of John Jones at the Big Cat gas station on Thursday, July 31.

A Columbus detective testified that police used store surveillance video and witness testimony to identify Saxton as the shooter. Saxton admitted to police that he was at the gas station that day and had a disagreement with Jones prior to the shooting.

The aggravated assault charge against Saxton was dropped. However, the judge denied bond for the murder charge and said there was enough probable cause for it to be upheld.

Saxton was also given a $5,000 bond for possession of a weapon.

The detective said in court that Saxton has a prior felony conviction from 2009, and we are working to learn the nature of that felony. The murder case has been bound over to Superior Court.
