COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - September is National Sickle Cell Disease Month and you canmake a difference in breaking the Sickle Cell Cycle.
The Association of Sickle Cell will sponsor the annualSickle Cell Walk-A-Thon/Parade on September 20 to increase publicawareness of the devastating effects of this disease and to raise funds tobenefit sickle cell patients in the community.
Registration beginsat 8 a.m. and the Walk beginsat 9:30 a.m. The route starts at 3rd Avenue and 5th Street,at Fourth Street Baptist Church, to 12th Street, down Broadwayand back to Fourth Street Baptist Church. You may walk, jog, run, trot, oreven ride.
This is a family event andall ages are welcome. Donations may be mailed to the Association orpresented at Registration on the day of the Walk. Each participant mustregister with a donation. All monetary gifts and donated items arewelcomed.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects millions of peoplethroughout the world and is particularly common amongthose whose ancestors came from sub-Saharan Africa, Spanish-speaking regions inthe Western Hemisphere, Saudi Arabia, India, Turkey, Greece, and Italy.
Inthe United States, sickle cell disease occurs in 1 in every 2,500 births,greater than that of any other condition detected by newborn screening.
The Association of Sickle Cell is asking you to make adifference by walking with them in this event as a demonstration of yoursupport.
