Motion to extend former Selma teacher's jail time still pending

SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

It's been more than a month since former Selma High School teacher LaTangela Williams got a free one-day pass to get out of the Dallas County jail.

At the time, the Dallas County Sheriff's Department allowed Williams to attend her father's church service in Orrville in which he is a pastor. Pastor Curtis Williams is also a Dallas County Commissioner.

Williams' temporary taste of freedom didn't sit well with the district attorney. Michael Jackson filed a motion to extend the former teacher's jail time.

So far, we haven't seen any movement on Jackson's court motion. Judge Jack Meigs told WSFA 12 News on Tuesday that he hasn't received any motions, so it appears at this point it's a logistical issue, meaning the actual paperwork hasn't reached the judge's desk.

Once that happens, Judge Meigs says he will then set a hearing but couldn't say when that might be because "it depends on what's on the docket."

Judge Meigs initially sentenced Williams to ten years in prison for having sex with a student and sexual contact with another student, but suspended most of that jail time to just 14 months in the Dallas County jail. Jackson's motion calls for Williams to serve out the entire original sentence of ten years.

For now, Jackson's motions still stand, and the only thing both sides can do is simply wait.

Williams' Selma attorney, John Kelly, says his client has been a "model" inmate and there've been no issues.  Williams began serving her time in April of this year.

Since the controversy, the Dallas County Sheriff's Department has created an oversight committee to thoroughly review each jail pass request.
