CULLMAN COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Garden City Elementary School in Cullman County has been condemned a week before classes are scheduled to begin.

Cullman County Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Ross said engineers told him the main building is "life-threatening" because the foundation is sinking and crumbling.

He said that brick pillars supporting floor joists under the school are crumbling in three areas where they sit on the foundation.

Ross said this doesn't affect the newer building on campus, which houses Kindergarten through third grade. Fourth and fifth grade students will be housed in portable classrooms.

On Thursday, workers, teachers and volunteers moved furniture and supplies from the affected classrooms and into other spaces.

Principal Susan Melton said on Thursday that she's proud of how the community reacted to the news.

"Last night we met with our community and our parents and they were wonderful. They walked in the door saying, 'Tell us what we need to do.' As soon as we explained the problem to them, they said, 'When can we go to work?''

Ross said this decision to move students wasn't tough but it remains to be seen if the damage can be repaired.
