COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus police are searching for a car thief who led police on a high speed chase.
The suspect managed to get away, but as News Leader 9's Semone Doughton explains in this week's Most Wanted, his days on the run could be cut short with help from you.
A simple trip to this Lucky Food Mart on Hunter Road in early July became the scene of a crime.
What was supposed to be a quick run into this Columbus store ended differently for one local driver.
"Unfortunately, the victim left the car running with the keys inside and the car was taken," said Sgt. Donald Bush with the Columbus Police Department. "It was a 2012 Chevrolet Impala with the car running unsecured."
And the crime didn't stop there.
According to Sgt. Donald Bush with the Columbus Police Department, after the suspect stole the car from the store's parking lot he led police on a high speed chase where he crashed the vehicle into a stop sign at Rigdon Road and Baldwin Street.
Some of the wrecked car parts can still be seen on the side of the road.
Police say the suspect still managed to jump out of the car and run away from the scene.
A Facebook photo of the man police are searching for shows that he looks to be in his early to mid 20's with a black goatee. But what makes the suspect stand out is the multiple tattoos he has on his chest.
So look closely at them, they may help you identify this wanted suspect.
As for the crime, Sgt Bush has advice for those of you who leave your car running unsecured.
"First of all take the keys with you. Cut the car off and secure your items so that they can't be seen because that presents an opportunity for a theft to occur."
If you recognize the suspect you are asked to call the local Crime Stoppers at 706-653-3188.
