Smiths Station railroad security measures

LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - The Lee County Commission will install new security measures after a Smiths Station high school teacher was hit by a train in her car directly across from the school last month.

Tonight, August 11, at the commission meeting, the highway department recommended the crossing remain open until crossing arms are installed due to traffic concerns.

They also said it will take up to six months for the design and the installation at the intersection to take place.

They are working to place additional warning signs near the crossing.
