Rev. Jesse Jackson delivers eulogy in Columbus for civil rights leader

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Funeral services for a longtime Civil Rights leader in Columbus were held Tuesday morning, Aug. 14.

Rev. Dr. William Howell, former president of the local chapter of rainbow push during the 90's, passed away a week ago, and Rev. Jesse Jackson delivered the eulogy at Howell's funeral.

Howell worked for years in the community pushing for equality. News Leader 9 spoke with Jackson about Howell's legacy.

"He was a supreme servant," Jackson said. "He was a social changer. There's a new Columbus now where blacks and whites can share together. He had to make that Columbus. The walls came down where we can go to school together and live together and be civilized together… He was an agitator. He disturbed the comfortable and made the comfortable disturbed because he kept pushing for change and for hope."

Jackson also spoke with News Leader 9 about the circumstances in Ferguson, Mo. He says he intends to travel there, but had to attend Howell's funeral, because it was important to him. More on his statements about Ferguson coming up later today.
