Cane Ridge High student dies after accident on campus

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Cane Ridge High School student has died after being thrown from the hood of a friend's vehicle following dismissal Monday afternoon, Metro police officials said.

Officers believe that 16-year-old Haljuer Hassan jumped onto the hood of a Honda Civic that was traveling in the school's parking lot after school Monday. The driver of the car, 17-year-old Wisam Titi, also a Cane Ridge student, applied the brakes. Hassan came off the hood.

Hassan was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was removed from life support Thursday.

Titi came to hospital late Monday afternoon and gave a statement to investigating officers. He said that he fled because others in the parking lot told him to do so.

Fatal crash officers are continuing to gather information. The case will be staffed with the District Attorney's Office at the conclusion of the investigation.

Charges have not yet been filed in this case.

Metro Schools spokesman Joe Bass issued the following statement:

"The staff and student are devastated by this accident and the Metro Schools' Crisis Response Team is on site this week for those who need assistance. School and district staff have been in regular contact to the student's family to offer support at this very difficult time and our thoughts continue to be with them."

School officials have encouraged parents to discuss motor vehicle safely and wise decision-making with their children.

"The lives of all involved have been forever altered by this avoidable accident," Bass said.

When asked why this information was only made public Thursday, a Metro Schools spokesperson said students and parents were their first priority.

Bass said he is not allowed to discuss if any disciplinary action will be taken against Titi.

Grief counselors will be made available at the school for anyone in need.
