Tucson outlet mall to break ground for construction

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Crews are scheduled to break ground for a new outlet mall in Marana by the end of August, paving the way for construction over the next year.

The Tucson Premium Outlets mall, to be located on Twin Peaks Road off I-10, is slated to open in time for the holiday season in 2015, according to Town of Marana Public Information Officer Rodney Campbell.

"We're going to have a building inspector in the grounds the entire time the construction takes place. We did the same thing in Ritz-Carlton in Dove Mountain and it enabled them to open their doors a little bit ahead of schedule," Campbell said.

Crews can begin grading the site now that an archaeological study, commissioned by Vintage Partners, is complete. The results were sent to the Army Corps of Engineers, which reviewed the study. Grading will begin on August 25 and construction expects to take 12 to 14 months.

Campbell said the outlet mall is the starting point of a larger development plan. The outlet will span about 46 acres out of the total 170-acre project.

It's unknown what stores or businesses will open at the outlet mall but shoppers can expect 90-plus shops to open on the first day of business.

Campbell said the model will be comparable to the Wild Horse Pass outlet mall in Chandler, which was also developed by Simon Property Group.

The Town of Marana expects the economic impact to be significant from sales tax revenue alone.

"It's really going to be destination shopping. You're going to see people coming from across the region, from Mexico, there's really no other project in this area that's going to come near matching what this mall is going to do when the doors open," Campbell said.
