(WXTX) - A recent Hardaway High School graduate drowned in the Oconee River just days before starting his freshman year of college, says a Brewton-Parker College official.
LaVon "Xavier" Woods, was attending Brewton-Park College in Mount Vernon, Georgia. College officials say Woods and several other students were swimming in the river on Aug. 14 during an end of orientation celebration when Woods drowned.
According to Southeast Georgia Today, Woods' body was recovered at about 9 p.m. Thursday.
Woods was a wrestler at Hardaway High School and joined the wrestling team at Brewton-Park College.
Principal Matt Bell released the following statement on the school's website on Friday:
"No words can describe the pain we are feeling due to the loss of Lavon Xavier Woods (c/o 2014). Xavier tragically drowned late Thursday afternoon during a swimming outing at Brewton-Parker College. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for everyone affected by this sad loss."
