Columbus teen drowns in Oconee River

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The life of a hometown hero with dreams of becoming an Olympic wrestler ended tragically.

The recent Hardaway high school graduate was swimming with his new college teammates yesterday, August 14, when he drowned in the Oconee River.

The principal says he's personally very saddened by the loss of Xavier Woods, who was a very popular student at Hardaway High School. In addition to his accomplishments on the wrestling mat, Woods also served as high school president. The college also extends its deepest sympathies to friends and family.
