Friends raise funds for Phenix City murder victim's funeral
PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -
Friends of a recent Phenix City murder victim held a fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 16, in order to help afford funeral expenses.
The body of 19-year-old Keonte Chavis was found late Saturday, Aug. 9, in the Lato community of Seale, Ala. Autopsy results showed that she died of strangulation and blunt force trauma.
At the fundraiser, friends sold T-shirts for $10 and barbeque lunch plates for any amount of donation. Their goal was to raise $800, and they exceeded the amount by raising $900.
"She was sweet, always laughing," recalled Candace Colson, a close friend of Chavis, and host of the fundraiser. "Just trying to do something in memory of her. No body deserves that you know. It's unbelievable that it happened that way by who it happened by. Just unbelievable."
Chavis' cousin, 29-year-old Christopher Grissom who goes by "Lil Chris", is suspected of strangling her to death.
Chavis' funeral is scheduled to take place Saturday, Aug. 23, at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Phenix City.
