Overnight fire at Wesley Heights Elementary School

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

An overnight fire broke out at Welsey Heights Elementary School on Amber Drive in Columbus.

A police officer noticed the school was on fire, and firefighters responded around 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Officials say a surge protector was sitting on a shelf, and caught on fire.

One classroom was damaged by flames, and several adjacent classrooms were damaged by smoke.

Valerie Fuller with the Muscogee County School District says they have moved students in those areas to the cafeteria, gym or media center while the clean-up is underway.

No one was injured in the incident.
