PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

The Phenix City Board of Education appointed a new attorney on Tuesday.

In a 5-0-1 vote, attorney Robert "Bob" T. Meadows was appointed as the school board's new attorney. This comes just weeks after former board attorney, Sydney Smith, resigned for personal reasons.

Attorney Meadows was recommended by Superintendent Randy Wilkes, who says his employment is immediate.

"We're excited about Mr. Bob Meadows," Wilkes said. "He has served as a board attorney for Barbour County, Eufaula City and also with Chambers County. So, Mr. Meadows has a very deep background in education law."

Meadows is a native of Opelika, Ala. and serves as the senior member of Capell & Howard's Opelika/Auburn office. In the past, he has served as the President of the Lee County Bar Association and the Alabama State Bar Young Lawyers' Section.

He remains active as a member of The Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, Defense Research Institute, and the Alabama Association of School Board Attorneys. He formerly served for nine years as the Bar Commissioner for the 37th Judicial Circuit.

He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America in the Commercial Litigation category since 2007.
