COLUMBUS, GA/PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

A flyer circulating on social media has been causing uproar in the Chattahoochee Valley, and local authorities are not laughing.

The flyer promotes a night of violence mimicking that of the popular horror film The Purge

The real life purge night began as a hoax by a teenager in Kentucky, but has quickly gone viral on social media.

Cory Edwards, a local father of three, says he's not taking any chances.

"Stay indoors. Lock their doors," he says.

What happens when life imitates art? It's seriously a scary idea—violence and mayhem, no crime is off limits.

In The Purge, all crime is legal for 12 hours. Now, it appears some people are wanting the real thing.

"A lot of young people these days look into characters and actors and films as a personality archetype that they try to mimic, and I don't think they should try to mimic anything like this," says Edwards.

The purge night, while not authorized by the government as it is in the movies, is said to be planned for Friday night, Aug. 22 in Columbus and Phenix City between the hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day.

It's a threat authorities are not taking lightly.

Phenix City Chief of Police Ray Smith says the department has already begun reaching out to people on social media who post the flyer.

PCPD has even addressed the issue on their Facebook page, saying:

"...Anyone in this city using this post to make threats to the community or to cause public alarm can be charged with terroristic threats and unlike the movie there will be consequences. Our patrol division will be on heightened alert this weekend for any possible disturbances."

Obviously, this is not the movies.

The Columbus Police Department says they are also aware of the flyer, they have received an influx of calls from concerned citizens, and they are taking the threat seriously.
