Movie set to be filmed in Opelika September 2014

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - Residents of Opelika will soon see their city lit up on the big screen serving as the setting of a new film.

The film "White Water" is based on the children's book co-written by an Opelika native, Michael Bandy.

"I am anxious to get them all in here and of course I can't wait to see the finished product when it shows up at the Carmike 13," says Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller.

Published in 2011, the book is about a 9-year-old African American child growing in 1963 segregated Opelika who becomes obsessed with the idea of drinking from the "white's only" drinking fountain.

The Alabama Film Office says movie producers are driven by location as well as incentives when it comes to picking a spot to shoot, but they didn't have to push to get White Water to Opelika.

"In the case of "White Water," it came to us because the book is set in Opelika, so they came to us wanting to shoot here and we were thrilled to hear from them," explains Alabama Film Manager, Kathy Faulk.

"The State recognizes as we do that it's an economic boost for our state. The more movies that are made here, the more movies will be made here," says Fuller.

Shooting will begin in mid September, lasting several weeks.

Producers have arrived and are currently scouting locations.

The film will be directed by Rusty Cundieff, who is known for Movie 43 and Chappelle's Show.

"Once they get here and set up shop, you're going to feel their presence, you're going to know they are there," says Faulk.

Officials are hoping this film will bring the community closer together, highlighting the contrast between the south in 1960 in comparison to today.

The most notable film to be shot in Opelika was "Norma Rae" released in 1979.

"Sally Field won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Norma Rae, so I am hoping the White Water folks will be equally as successful," says Fuller.
