GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

Toyota announces it will create 300 new jobs as it plans to expand operations at its Gibson County plant.

The company said Friday that it will invest $100 million to produce 30,000 more Highlander SUV's.

Currently, Toyota builds the Highlander at its West Plant along with the Sequoia full-sized SUV.

To meet increasing demand for the Highlander, Toyota says production of up to 30,000 of the mid-sized SUV's will be added to the East Plant where the Sienna minivan is built.

"This exciting news is a true testament to the capability of our hard-working and dedicated team members," said Norm Bafunno, President of Toyota Indiana.

Bafunno says sales of the new Highlander have exceeded expectations and that, from January to July, Toyota sold about 90,000 of them.

"Toyota continues to show confidence in their Gibson County team members who build three of the best made automobiles in the world," said Rob Hurst, Princeton Mayor.

Toyota will begin to accept job applications right away and expand the plant at the beginning of 2015.

This expansion will bring Toyota Indiana's overall investment to $4 billion.
