Preliminary autopsy report sheds no light on Lee Co. detainee's cause of death

LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

A preliminary autopsy report has been completed, but the cause of death for an Auburn man who died at the Lee County Detention Center is still a mystery.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris says the report still lists James Hubbard's manner of death as pending.

Harris says further tests, such as toxicology and tissue sample tests, are being conducted to determine what killed the 23-year old.

Hubbard passed away Friday night, Aug. 15, in a holding cell at the Lee County Detention Facility. He was serving the first of a three weekend sentence for an Opelika DUI conviction.

Deputies suspected Hubbard was under the influence when he reported to the facility

Sheriff Jay Jones says Hubbard was intoxicated, but did not appear to be in medical distress, and was placed in holding cell for observation.

Hubbard was found unresponsive a few hours later, and pronounced dead.

Harris expects an official cause of death to take a few weeks, or even months to determine.
