CSU students volunteer with House of Heroes for annual Day of Service

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Several students from Columbus State University spent their annual Day of Service on Saturday, Aug. 23, helping Columbus area organizations revamp homes.

Thirty students were assigned to help demolish and rebuild the home of Mrs. Edna Reeves, the recipient of Columbus Cottage Progam's seventh cottage.

Reeves is the widow of Naval veteran Darryl Reeves who passed away a few years ago.

The Reeves home is the first collaboration between House of Heroes, Chattahoochee Valley Chapter, Inc. and NeighborWords Columbus. The partnership began in May.

The CSU baseball team, along with 10 Fort Benning soldiers, also helped paint the exterior of a second home.

House of Heroes has set the goal for helping 12 houses in 12 weeks.

Since its inception on November 18, 1999, House of Heroes volunteers have installed handicap ramps and fixtures, completed minor repairs to the homes that affect the quality of life for the elderly or disabled veterans and/or their spouses, at no cost to them.

To date, House of Heroes has helped over 516 recipients and then recognized them at a special ceremony to present them with a flag that has flown over the Capital of the United States in their honor.
