Letter writing campaign to save Ft. Benning exceeds goal

(WXTX) -

Pezold Management and thousands of other supporters are doing all they can to save jobs at Fort Benning.

The results of the "Stand Up for Fort Benning" letter writing campaign were announced on Monday, and they far surpassed their goal of 10,000 letters.

The final count of letters, emails and text messages sent in: 17,402 in just eight days.

"Columbus has a history of really supporting Ft. Benning, and it's real important because there's a lot of money that's spent here at Ft. Benning and there are a lot of good jobs," said Jack Pezold, owner and operator of Pezold Management. "I mean, 10,000 jobs… that is huge."

Citizens were invited to visit supporting businesses like McDonald's, Kinetic Credit Union, Headquarter Nissan, and Valley Hospitality Services. Supporters were invited to either sign a pre-written letter or bring their own.

These letters will now be sent to the U.S. Army Environmental Command in Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Pezold credits McDonald's internal philosophy that people can accomplish more working together than individually.

"Everybody got behind it, and it's kind of a tribute to none of us is as good as all of us. So if we all pull together for a good cause, we can make things happen."

The Chamber of Commerce says an Army draw down in the region could cost almost 14,000 jobs in the defense and contractor sectors.

The cuts could have a $1.3 billion impact, according to the Chamber.
