AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - The votes are in and Auburn residents living in wards 1, 3, 5 and 6 have selected their next city council representatives.
After a heated campaign trail, the winner of Ward 1 is Clemon Byrd defeating incumbent Arthur Dowdell with 63 percent of the vote.
After Ward 1's results were announced, a fight broke out at city hall resulting in some of Dowdell's supporters being escorted outside.
"When you push forward and remain positive and take the high road every time you're going to come out on top," explains Byrd.
Beth Witten took Ward 3 defeating Wendell McClain in a tight race with 55 percent of the vote.
"Every vote counted because it was such a tight race. Just to know everyone who came out today was important and was necessary."
Ward 5's representative is now Lynda Tremaine defeating incumbent Robin Kelley with 84 percent of the vote.
"I'm looking forward to four years of having the opportunity to keep the communication going between residents and hopefully making decisions that will make Auburn the loveliest village," says Tremaine.
Finally, the winner of Ward 6 is incumbent Dick Phelan who defeated Brad Donnelly with 62 percent of the vote.
Auburn Mayor Bill Ham as well as council people for Wards 2, 4, 7 and 8 ran unopposed.
The entire council will take the oath of office November 3rd.
