RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

New details are surfacing about the about the messy argument that led to the arrest of Huguenot High School principal Jafar Barakat.

The mother of his children filed a warrant for his arrest, Sunday. Barakat is now charged with assault and battery.

The mother, whose name we chose not to release, says she met Barakat at the Panera Bread at Willow Lawn, to pick up her children. She writes that she and Barakat began to argue over the childrens' shoes and haircut. The pair exchanged curse words, according to the document. The mother then claims Barakat threw pretzels in her face. She says Barakat called police.

Barakat faced a judge Wednesday morning, and now faces misdemeanor assault and battery. It's what students are talking about at Huguenot High.

"Facebook… Everybody's trying to figure out what happened," said Gloria Castillo, a student at the high school.

The mother also filed for a protective order, writing that Barakat "threw food at her face and has become verbally and physically abusive."

Court documents show a judge denied the protective order because of lack of evidence. A previous protective order against Barakat expired September 3.

School administrators put Barakat on administrative leave, while the charges are pending. The mother appealed the judge's decision not to grant the protective order. Barakat's trial is set for next month.

A spokesperson for Richmond Public Schools said the administration was made aware of the issue Tuesday, when Barakat himself reported it to them. The school board met in closed session Tuesday evening to discuss any possible personnel disciplinary action the district might take.

Late Tuesday night, the Richmond school system made the decision to place Barakat on desk duty, which means he will not be at the high school while the outcome of the charges is still pending.
