Columbus – The Columbus State volleyball team opened its home portion of the 2014 schedule on Tuesday night falling 3-1 to Valdosta State at the Lumpkin Center.
VSU (3-0) raced out to an early lead with a 25-14 opening set win.
The Lady Cougars fell behind again early in set two and were close to being two sets down. Trailing 21-14, Columbus State reeled off 11 of the set's final 13 points to win the second 25-23. Erika Gelzinyte keyed the run turning in four consecutive aces during the stretch.
The Blazers would rebound though, holding off the Lady Cougars in sets three and four 25-22 and 25-21, respectively.
Columbus State (1-4) was led by Gelzinyte and Katie Poole, who had 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Gelzinyte also had six service aces.
Kylie Beaubien had a good match as well tallying nine kills.
For Valdosta State, Lea Jaklen had a team high 13 kills while Destiny Berry added 10.
Columbus State will be back in action this weekend in the Cougar Invitational. The Lady Cougars will play Mars Hill on Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET before taking on Pfeiffer and Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.
