(WTVM) - On Monday afternoon, a local veteran received an important military honor.
President Obama awarded retired Army Command Sergeant Major Bennie Adkins in Opelika with the Medal of Honor at the White House.
CSM Adkins distinguished himself during 38 hours of close-combat fighting and 48 hours of escape and evasion against enemy forces in March 1966.
CSM Adkins is the 80th service member to receive the Medal of Honor while still living.
"When you get the call from the President, of course that's the President of the country, and the commander and chief of the military, when he personally calls you, that's very humbling," he said.
CSM Adkins and his wife Mary of 59 years both attended the ceremony. Specialist Four Donald Sloat received the Medal of Honor posthumously.
