PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Authorities say Tyrell Kynard was shot and killed Saturday night after leaving an invitation-only party at Phenix City's Central Activities Center. It is Phenix City's second homicide in 2014.
Captain Frank Ivey with the Phenix City Police Department explains "the first one was at January 7 and this one here is September. So, this is the second event of this nature."
Almost immediately, family and friends held a vigil to mourn the loss of the Central High School senior with a memorial at the blood-stained spot where Kynard's lifeless body laid, pleading for information.
"And if anybody knows anything, y'all need to say something," Susan Koen, Kynard's aunt urges.
Superintendent Randy Wilkes issued this statement Monday on behalf of the Phenix City Board of Education saying in part "while we do not know why these things happen, we can be comforted by the fact that Tyrell was loved by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, community and school during this difficult time."
And the Phenix City Police Department assures they're working to figure out what happened. But right now, it's slow moving.
Captain Ivey adds "because we're dealing with a large number of people that we think have the potential to be witnesses or not be witnesses. So, right now what we're doing is trying to just either verify or eliminate a lot of people."
Captain Ivey says Kynard was one of several people leaving the party and that this tragic situation is not a reflection of the safety around the Phenix City Library and the Central Activities Center.
"We have social gatherings here basically everyday and most times they go off without any major or minor problems," said Captain Ivey. "So, I think that this here is the exception and not the rule itself."
At this time, no arrests have been made. Tyrelle Kynard will be held on September 27 at Noon at Bethel AME Church in Phenix City. A fund to help with the cost of the arrangements has been set up at Wells Fargo locations across the valley under the name Tyrelle Kynard.
If you know anything about his murder, you are asked to contact the Phenix City Police Department at 334-298-0611.
