'Bang Bang Lady' asks the community to help collect 500 coats for veterans

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The popular "Bang Bang Lady" at Fireworks Outlet in Seale, AL is holding a coat drive for veterans this winter, and she's asking the community to get involved.

This is Wanda Lamb's first coat drive and she's trying to collect about 500 coats to give to our homeless veterans this season. She's only collected about ten coats so far but Lamb is optimistic about the drive and she believes it's possible to collect 500 coats.

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness website, one out of every four homeless people is a veteran. Lamb says this is a problem in her community as well.

"This issue is something that has touched my heart," Lamb said. "I've seen so many veterans who needed coats, so I decided to do this. I'm hoping to make this into an annual event if I can get more people to help the drive."

Lamb said the American Legion Post 135 in Phenix City is also working on the coat drive to help the Veterans.

"Commander Leroy Davis of the American Legion post 135 and I are doing this together,” Lamb explained. “People can also drop off their coats at the American Legion Post in Phenix City as well."

The coat drive kicked off on October 2 and Lamb said the last day to donate will be Dec 20.

"They fought for our lives and our freedom," Lamb said. "Let's take care of them this time."

Jennifer Whidden, a Fireworks Outlet employee says she's also donated a couple of coats to Lamb's drive in honor of her father.

"My father is a veteran," Whidden said. "We have many veterans who are in unfortunate situations and we often overlook this problem. It's time to help those who helped us for years. We shouldn't put our veterans on the back burner. It also feels good to see our community come together to help our veterans."

"I'm sure many people have a jacket or two that they don't wear anymore in their closets," Lamb said. "Please donate new or gently used coats to Fireworks Outlet or the American Legion Post. If you are unable to drive by these two places, then I'm willing to go pick them up from your homes."

Fireworks Outlet is located at 4360 U.S. 431 in Seale, AL and the American Legion Post 135 is located at 511 13 Street, Phenix City, AL. Those interested in donating can also call Wanda Lamb at her store at 334-297-5591.
