COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Fort Benning soldiers and church volunteers serve a Thanksgiving meal to folks who need a little extra help this time of year.
Hundreds of families and people who are down on their luck were treated to plates of delicious holiday selections at the Open Door Community House in Columbus. The soldiers are volunteering during their time off and they are happy to be a part of this special event that really made a difference.
"Anyone who is in a situation of dire need or dire straits, people who don't get the opportunity to know where their next meal is coming from. Maybe they struggle from day-to-day," says U.S. Army Sergeant Brock Jas.
"It's nice to be able to have those who are back here to experience this as a family, and as a brotherhood, with those who are important to us to be able to experience Thanksgiving," says U.S. Army Lieutenant Christopher Hambidge.
Open Door is a group that focuses on helping impoverished people in the community and tries to get them to reach their full potential.
