Economic plan announced for Auburn's vacant Kmart building

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - In Auburn, Ala., a new economic development project has been announced.

The vacant Kmart building on East University Drive is set to be torn down, to make room for a new project.

For three years, the large, commercial space across from the Auburn Mall has sat mostly vacant since Kmart closed its doors. City officials say a timetable for demolition should be set by the first of the year.

"I am excited, I work a mile from here so it will be nice to come here and shop and eat lunch and it will be nice to have this building removed and something new put up, I'm excited," said Tammie Hill of Opelika.

"It was an eyesore, so to see it revitalized and rejuvenate is a great thing for the city and also for this area along Opelika Road," added Kimberly Travis of Auburn.

Cypress Acquisitions plans on building a new grocery store, along with other shops.
