Iron Bowl fans asked to support their team by donating to the Salvation Army red kettles

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - It is a familiar holiday sight, red kettle bell ringers standing outside grocery stores seeking donations.

This year the Salvation Army of Lee County is kicking the tradition up a notch in light of Iron Bowl Week.

"It would be nice to turn this long standing rivalry into a friendly competition in town," explains Director, Annabelle Tsui.

Inspired by the Beat Bama Food Drive, the Salvation Army invites football fans of both teams to donate funds or their time this Saturday, November 29.

Special Roll Tide and War Eagle kettles will be set up at three locations, the Auburn Walmart, the Opelika Walmart and the Tiger Town Kroger.

"The holidays are a great time for people to show the spirit of giving," says Tsui.

This is the Salvation Army's only fundraising event of the year.

The money raised will stay in Lee County to provide emergency assistance, Senior Feeding Program, disaster relief and other social services in the community.

"We would like to invite football fans to extend their support to the Christmas kettle," says Tsui.

This one-day event on November 29 will start at 10:00 AM to 6:45 PM.

The winner of this friendly competition will be announced the following week.

If any interested fans wish to volunteer for this event, please contact the Salvation Army at 334-826-0073.
