COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus police need your help solving a 16-year old murder case. The case has gone cold but with your help police may finally be able to close it.
This is the face of a murder victim whose killer is still on the loose. She's Laura Mae Chaney and she was gunned down at Peabody Apartments on January 4, 1998.
Years later Peabody Apartments were torn down to make room for a new complex called Ashley Station.
Although the setting of the crime scene has changed, police say the search for Chaney's killer has not.
"We start any murder case with people from the inner circle beginning with the family, then the friends and all acquaintances," said Sgt. Donald Bush. "We start from the inside to the outside."
Police say Chaney's body was found lying near the street with multiple gunshot wounds, and 16 years later no evidence or witnesses has ever surfaced.
Sgt. Donald Bush with the Columbus Police Department says these types of cases are hard to solve but with your help maybe the smallest details can provide investigators with the information they need to make an arrest, which in turn would finally provide the family of Laura Chaney some closure.
"You have to keep the family notified and inform them of the status. From time to time they will call you but mostly you need to let them know that you are still looking for their loved one's killer and then they can be at ease, because until they get justice they are never satisfied."
This is a case Columbus police would like to solve immediately, but they desperately need your help.
If you know anything about the murder of Laura Chaney, you are asked to call Columbus police at (706) 653-3188. .
