AU awarding 1,498 degrees in fall ceremonies featuring guest speaker Jim Voss

Auburn University will award 1,498 academic degrees Saturday, Dec. 13 in Auburn Arena during two fall graduation ceremonies featuring addresses by Auburn alumnus and former NASA astronaut Jim Voss.

The 10 a.m. ceremony will include the colleges, schools and programs of Architecture, Design and Construction; Engineering; Interdisciplinary Studies; Liberal Arts; Nursing; and Sciences and Mathematics. The 2 p.m. ceremony will be held for the colleges and schools of Agriculture; Business; Education; Forestry and Wildlife Sciences; and Human Sciences. The ceremonies can be viewed live through the university's website at www.auburn.edu/graduationlive.

Voss graduated from Auburn with a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering in 1972 and from the University of Colorado with a master's degree in 1974 and an honorary doctorate in 2000. He is an alumnus of Opelika High School.

He flew on five space missions with NASA and conducted four spacewalks, including the longest in history. On retirement in 2003 he became associate dean of engineering at Auburn until 2005. From 2005 to 2013 he worked in private industry as vice president for three companies with responsibility for developing human spacecraft for NASA. In 2009 he became a scholar in residence at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

During Auburn's graduation ceremonies, the university will award 1,141 bachelor's degrees, 270 master's degrees, 77 doctorates, nine education specialist degrees and one professional pharmacy degree.

The College of Liberal Arts will award the most bachelor's degrees with 253, followed by the Raymond J. Harbert College of Business with 223. The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering will present 182 degrees; College of Sciences and Mathematics, 142; College of Education, 99; College of Architecture, Design and Construction, 69; College of Human Sciences, 69; College of Agriculture, 64; Office of the Provost, 24 degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies; and School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, 16.

Auburn University has awarded more than 285,000 degrees since its founding as East Alabama Male College in 1856.

    CHATTAHOOCHEE CO., GA (WTVM) - The Chattahoochee County Water Department has issued a "boil water" notice in the "Old City Limits" area. The advisory was issued due to a system disruption Sunday. County officials say the water system is back up, however, the advisory must remain in effect as part of protocol. No other issues with the water system is expected.
