EUFAULA, AL (WTVM) - Eufaula officials have filed a federal lawsuit aimed at stopping the widening of a highway that goes through the city's historic district.

Mayor Jack Tibbs tells us the city filed the suit Monday, Dec. 8. The project would widen the highway to four lanes.

Alabama officials agreed to delay the widening project in Eufaula through the end of the year.

The judge says he will rule on Eufaula's request for a temporary restraining order on Dec. 31.

State officials say 74 percent of residents were in favor of the project, according to a survey.

Residents against the changes say it will forever destroy the city's picturesque North Eufaula Avenue considered by many to be part of Eufaula's cultural heritage and identity.
