AUBURN, AL (WTVM) – The murder trial for an East Alabama man accused of killing a 4-year-old girl continues in Lee County.
A jury was selected Tuesday afternoon and opening statements are expected to begin first thing Wednesday morning.
In May of 2012 Auburn investigators say Ramiro Delreal-Contreras killed 4- year- old Ava Zapata by kicking her and beating her to death. Delreal-Contreras was the live in boyfriend of the child's mother.
The child died at UAB, when her organs shut down. Delreal-Contreras, allegedly told investigators he accidentally kicked the little girl in her stomach while babysitting.
He also told police he did not tell anyone because he thought Ava would get better.
Delreal-Contreras faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. The death penalty is not an option in his trial.
We are waiting to hear from the Lee County District Attorney's office as to why they are not seeking the death penalty. He has been behind bars at the Lee County Detention Center since his arrest. He's being held with no bond.
News Leader Nine will continue to cover the trial and give more information as it becomes available.
