AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - Auburn head football coach Gus Malzahn and members of the Auburn team are reacting to Jakell Mitchell's death.

Malzahn held a news conference Monday afternoon on Dec. 15 to talk about what he calls a senseless tragedy.

Malzahn said he's known Jakell for a long time and has a lot of memories that make him smile, epecially memories off the field.

"Last 48 hours have been tough and challenging we lost a member of our family that was very close to our players our coaches our thoughts and prayers go out to Jakell's family in this time," Malzahn stated.

"He was a good kid. He was a great player,” added teammate Sammie Coates. “You know I've been here, I've been through a lot of tragedies since I've been here and every time something like that happens it breaks your heart because you don't want to see that happen to your family member."

Malzahn also told reporters no players live at the apartment complex where the shooting happened and says no other players were at the party that night.
