DETROIT (WTVM) – Ford Motor Co. is meeting government demands and is expanding its air bag recall nationwide.
The side air bag inflator recall adds 447,000 vehicles to the list, as they can explode too much force: spewing shrapnel into the drivers and passengers. These airbags were made by Japan's Takata Corporation.
The recall covers certain 2005-2008 Mustangs as well as 2005-2006 GT sport cars. The recall would also cover the same cars in Canada and Mexico.
Pressure has been placed on BMW and Chrysler, the only two automakers that have not agreed to national recalls.
Ford says that it knows of at least one accident and injury that took place in North Carolina involving, a 2007 Mustang. Dealers will replace the inflators at no cost to customers.
