COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Blue lights lit up the parking lot of Midtown Medical Center on Tuesday evening as part of a holiday display to bring cheers and smiles to several children who have to spend Christmas hospitalized.
The event to bring smiles to the children continued inside the hospital moments later when children received Christmas presents as well.
Besides hospital medical staff, Columbus city police officers and deputy sheriffs also participated in the event.
"We want to make sure everybody smiles around Christmas time,” said Lieutenant Joyce Dent-Fitzpatrick with the Columbus Police Department. “It's not about law enforcement, it's about the children confined to the hospital.”
Aflac made a large donation of stuff animals, and students from Shaw High School also took time from their Christmas break to help.
Lt. Dent-Fitzpatrick says Blue Lights and Smiles will become an annual event.
