WTVM Editorials 1/2/15: Guns rights

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – When a mom took her kids shopping at a Walmart just before Christmas, no one could have guessed that her 2-year-old would reach into mom's purse, pull out a loaded gun, shoot and kill her.

It happened in Idaho.

The mom had a concealed carry permit for her gun, and her child was curious enough to fish it out of the mom's purse and strong enough to pull the trigger.

As usual, the problem is not the gun; the problem is the lack of responsible gun ownership.

We can all agree her death is a tragic accident, especially around the holidays; especially because it should never have happened.

What in the world was her purse, holding a loaded gun, doing anywhere near any of her children? Parents who carry guns or keep one in their home are solely responsible for their gun staying out of the hands of children.

There are too many ways to keep children and guns separated and safe.

It's just common sense.
