Eufaula man celebrates 111th birthday

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Happy belated birthday James Richardson!

Richardson celebrated his 111th birthday on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the Parkwood Health Care Center in Phenix City. He was born January 2, 1904 in Eufaula, Ala.

The Parkwood Health Care staff say he loves his nurse Wanda Thorne more than just about anything.

"Mr. Richardson is just amazing," said his nurse Wanda Thorne. "I never thought I would have a chance to meet anybody that old and tell you stuff I even know about, just agree with him."

Richardson has been at the Parkwood Health Care Center since 2007.

He says the keys to his health include believing in God, treating people right, and never depending on prescription drugs.

Here are some fun facts about the oldest living man in Alabama:

His earliest memories are working on the farm plowing with mules. He worked on a farm with and for his father, and drove a tractor to plow the fields.

He's been married three times, and his last wife passed away in 2012 at 97 years old.

He has two sons, seven grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

He is very particular about his bedtime ritual: first, he puts eight pillows on his bed, then sleeps under five or more covers.

He walks and exercises daily with hand weights. He can also do most of his ADLs by himself.

He loves fried chicken and fried fish. He loves sweets, especially Reese's Cups and Moon Pies.

He loves watching TV. His favorite shows are Judge Judy, Maury, and Judge Joe Brown.

He only believes in tap water and does not like ice in anything.

He loves gospel singing and the old Hymns.

His favorite meal is breakfast. He loves his grits with cheese and plenty of salt. He also loves his coffee very hot with eight to 10 sugars.

He always like to wear his cap, and only likes long socks that come up to his knees. He also loves wearing sweatpants, but they must have pockets.

His family says he has a great memory and never forgets, and he loves to gossip when they visit.

His words of advice: Trust and believe in God and treat everyone right.
